Summer is severe weather season in Kansas and that frequently includes hail. On June 19, 1992 two sets of severe thunderstorms raked South Central Kansas. The storms, which occurred within 6 hours of each other, dumped hailstones up to 4.5 inches in diameter across Sedgwick and surrounding counties in the South Central Division. Over 10,000 homes were damaged. The hail left wheat fields, which were close to harvest, in a near total loss. The estimated property damage totaled $500 million and crop damage at $100 million. This thunderstorm episode ranks as one of the worst ever to hit Kansas.
