Summer thunderstorms can produce heavy rain and flooding. One such system hit southwest Kansas on June 4, 1989. Thunderstorms produced locally heavy rains of up to 5 inches in two hours across parts of Ford and Finney counties. Kalvesta in eastern Finney County reported that several fences were washed away and highway 156 was closed for a few hours because of high water. Dodge City also received heavy rains that washed several cars off roadways. One man nearly drowned as the flood waters carried him nearly two blocks after he left his car and tried to walk through moving water. Remember that flood waters can be incredibly dangerous.
