December 6th marks the anniversary of a significant ice storm in southwest Kansas. On that day in 1994 much of southwest Kansas saw a coating of surfaces with one half to one inch of ice. There was a tremendous amount of tree damage. However, damage to power lines was minimal. According to the electric companies the outages to various communities were limited to several hours, rather than several days. The biggest problem was with traffic accidents. Sadly, one traffic fatality in the Larned area was blamed on the icy roads.
